Friday Night

(Steve Key)
February 8, 2011
Lyric by Michael Gutierrez-May, music by Steve Key

Nurses in a circle— doctors shift begin
Technicians shuffle around the rooms -- Here I am again
It's quiet at the moment -- No ambulance in sight
We all report for duty on another Friday night.

Just another Friday night
Just another Friday night
It's never just another Friday night.

I am looking at the trackers, I am settled in my chair
When I hear a voice say "Trauma 2", "10 minutes, they'll be here."
The charge nurse paces nervously--getting ready in Room One
I may or may not be involved in rescuing someone.

Just another Friday night
Just another Friday night
It's never just another Friday night.

The ambulance pulls in -- I can hear somebody cry.
I may or may not be involved -- someone may or may not die.
I read the trackers: CPR, it could go either way.
Age 70 from Holbrook – he was shoveling snow today.

Just another Friday night
Just another Friday night
It's never just another Friday night.

Twenty minutes, they call "Code", the Holbrook man has died
And that someone who was crying needs someone by her side

I offer information -- but mostly I just sit there
Help her gather up her thoughts and focus them somewhere.
Then my pager rings and I know I cannot stay
I say "The doctor will be here in a minute." Then I walk away.

Just another Friday night
Just another Friday night
It's never just another Friday night
