Steve Key: Songs/Lyrics

Daddy’s Guitar

(Steve Key & Dorian Michael)
April 1, 2016
PJ Robertson & Steve Key

This is PJ's story, at least through the first two verses. I took notes. I hosted a songwriters workshop in my home, and got feedback on the song from Erin Inglish, Jody Mulgrew, and Ynana Rose. I incorporated their ideas into a re-write of the lyric. http://www.pjrobertsonmusic.com/

Daddy's Guitar (c) 2016 by PJ Robertson & Steve Key (Key of E)

(note: I play it capo 2 in D, capo over 5 strings, leaving 6th string open for "fake drop D")

v. 1  Daddy died at 51 of a broken heart                (B-E)

Going through his closet, I found his old guitar        (B-E)

It had no strings, the wood was cracked and torn apart     (A-E)

It took awhile to fix it up and play it, but here we are        (B-E)

CH  Hey Daddy, can you hear me right now playing your old guitar                     (E-D-A-E)

Hey Daddy, I believe this old six-string is gonna take me far                              (E-D-A-B)

Hey Daddy, you put all that country music in a young man’s heart                    (C#m-A-E)

Now watch me singing and playing my Daddy’s guitar (A-B-E)

v. 2 Momma disappeared when I was nine years old

Where she went and why only the Lord knows

You might say Daddy’s second wife was a lost soul

It took me years to believe in myself again, but here I go (to CH)

Br. I go driving sometimes, singing an old melody (D-A-E)

I remember Daddy teaching me how to sing harmony (C#m-A-B)

Sometimes I wonder why I’m singing these old songs (D-A-E)

Then from the back seat I hear my little girl singing along (C#m-A-B)

Hey Daddy, can you hear your granddaughter playing your old guitar

Hey Daddy, I believe that old six-string is gonna take her far

Hey Daddy, I put all your country music in that young girl’s heart

Now I watch her singing and playing my Daddy’s guitar

I watch her singing and playing my Daddy’s guitar
