Steve Key: Songs/Lyrics

What are you telling me?

On Feb. 1, 2015, I started off my showcase at Sculpterra Winery, expecting to do my usual warm-up of original songs. But the upper range of my singing voice was missing. No reason -- I didn't have a cold, hadn't been screaming the previous day. It was like trying to play guitar chords without my index finger (which I did once, another story). I saw two doctors, including a specialist who put a scope down my throat, couldn't find a reason. Consulted with two voice teachers (thanks Jim Townsend and JP Maddex for your time), still had no clue. I mentioned it to several friends, including Debra Windsong, who suggested that it could be a warning sign of other problems. She said, "why don't you ask your voice what it's trying to tell you?" Thank you, Debra, for giving me the title of this song. I've had the chance to perform it with Debra, who adds an amazing harmonica part. Check her out at http://www.debrawindsong.com/

PS--The upper range came back end of April, after a 10-day head cold that must've knocked something loose.  Feeling much better now, thanks for asking.

Have I neglected you? Is that why you've gone away?
I always respected you, and I'm missing you today
If only I had a plan then I’d know what to do
What are you telling me? Have I neglected you?
Did I do something wrong? Or didn't do what I should
Is it too late to change, as if I ever could
Won't you come back to me, I can't believe you're gone
What are you telling me? Did I do something wrong?
Silence is the hardest part
I miss my old friend
Silence is gonna break my heart
Tell me how to start again
Every doctor says they have no pill or cure
Every friend I know says you'll be back for sure
Everyone but you has got something to say
What are you telling me? Why have you gone away
What are you telling me?

Verse 1: Have I neglected you? Is that why you've gone away?

I always respected you, and I'm missing you today

If only I had a plan then I’d know what to do

What are you telling me? Have I neglected you?

Verse 2: Did I do something wrong? Or didn't do what I should

Is it too late to change, as if I ever could

Won't you come back to me, I can't believe you're gone

What are you telling me? Did I do something wrong?

Bridge:
Silence is the hardest part -- I miss my old friend.

Silence is gonna break my heart -- tell me how to start again

Verse 3: Every doctor says there is no pill or cure

Every friend I know says you'll be back for sure

Everyone but you has got something to say

What are you telling me? Why have you gone away

What are you telling me?
